Extractions from the land are part of the human experience of occupation of land. In the Cobb Valley in Kahurangi National Park, serpentine rock containing asbestos was discovered in the 1880s. The serpentine rock has beautiful colour and texture, but the asbestos fibres are now known to be extremely hazardous to human health.
