Levi Hawken

Levi Hawken is a brutalist/modern sculptor and painter from Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa NZ. His work adapts forms derived from letters and symbols into three dimensional objects using permanent materials such as concrete, wood, glass, bronze and aluminium.

His relationship with architecture through skateboarding and graffiti is unique, exploring scale and the interplay of shadow and light created by their stratified construction. Importantly, these objects are adaptable, their physical realities allowing them to comfortably exist in disparate settings, from galleries to gardens, skate parks to shopping malls, and most recently, returning to the urban environment that ultimately fostered their creation.

Although largely self taught and new to the world of commercial art, it’s like he has been here all along, in the background soaking up his environment and expressing it.
