Simone de Beauvoir wrote in The Second Sex that ‘the home becomes the centre of the world and even its only reality; ‘a kind of counter-universe or universe in opposition’ (Bachelard); refuge, retreat, grotto, womb, it gives shelter from outside dangers; it is this confused outer world that becomes unreal. ... Reality is concentrated inside the house, while outer space seems to collapse.’

The original images, constructed from collage materials torn from magazines, reflect my journey returning home after 15 years away. Finding a home became a top priority. The self-portraits have evolved from collages into gestural brushwork portraits that distort time and space. They offer glimpses of everyday objects and life while considering the subtleties and frailty of human existence.
