Statement

Te Ua Haumēne was a Māori Prophet who founded a political and religious movement in 1862, which was based on the teachings of Christ. Called Pai Mārire ("Goodness and peace") it was a response to land confiscation. However, it became strongly associated with violent resistance, known as the Hauhau movement. While Te Ua and some followers practiced peaceful resistance, others engaged in violent, anti-colonial actions against settlers and opposing Māori factions.

Because of the movement's continued descent into violence and superstition, Te Ua eventually renounced his mantle as the prophet.

This work is painted on a woollen blanket, a connection and metaphor for colonisation and christianity.
