Yvette Byrd is a painter and installation artist based in Nelson New Zealand whose work draws on the undercurrents of the modern condition often referencing historic and cultural tropes. Moving through themes of the unconscious, the politics of beauty and the fragile human state their practice resists easy interpretation, favouring quiet gestures over obvious declarations. With an approach that feels at once precise and ephemeral, their compositions suggest rather than state, leaving space for shifting meaning. Stylistically fluid and experimental there are constants of the ironic, poignant and pensive. Byrd's work often features layered meaning and a calm but mildly threatening atmosphere, offering insightful perspectives on the human experience.
Yvette completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (hons) at NMIT. Studying painting under Katherine Hodgson and Errol Shaw. Going on to study graphics and multimedia at NMIT. Yvette has an over 30 year history of exhibiting in New Zealand and the UK.
