Art that is born out of feeling

My paintings are a way to attend to the most primal impulse to be responsive to the visual recording of personal experience.  Painting is the voice I use to communicate, connecting with myself and others in both a spiritual and physical sense, making conscious and sub-conscious connections with the world in which we live.  I am seeking to portray an experience of living through existential means.   The paintings are visual recordings and notations of evidence.  Working in the moment, I explore the relationship between the mark and gesture.  My work is a broad exploration of material and process; analysing and breaking down what I see and feel; a re-assembling of sensations towards a new autonomous ‘invention’.

I honour those that have been before and their ability to extract where there is seemingly nothing, paying homage to the courage and beauty of the human spirit.

Jane Tan studied at the Browne School of Art and now works from her studio just outside Nelson.
