Kathaleen Bartha
Geometric Abstraction is my visual language as I explore the elements and interrelations of Line, Volume and Space. And as Kandinsky would have put it, the work always begins with a 'Point and Line to Plane.'
Kathaleen Bartha emigrated to New Zealand from Canada in 1980. She grew up in Toronto during the 1960s and 70s, a city she describes as dominated by Brutalist architecture with a retro-futuristic appeal. This aesthetic has influenced her art practice ever since.
Kathaleen works across a wide range of mediums including bronze casting, graphic design and painting. Geometric abstraction is a strong feature of her practice, with an emphasis on line, light and volume in space.
Her paintings embody the essence of minimalism, echoing the profound simplicity of contemporary minimal artists. As Mark Rothko observed, 'A painting is not a picture of an experience; it is the experience.'
Through restrained gestures and subtle narratives, Kathaleen's art becomes the experience, transcending representation to evoke inquiry and contemplation.
