Elena Renker
My aim is not perfection, on the contrary, my belief is that imperfections make the bowls come alive, make them easier to relate to, make them more human. Nature’s perfection lies within its own asymmetry.
Elena Renker is a ceramic artist originally from Germany, now based in Aotearoa New Zealand. She began working with clay in the late 1970s and later formalised her training with a Diploma in Ceramic Art from Otago Polytechnic.
Her practice centres on functional ware designed for everyday use, pieces that feel good in the hand and enhance daily rituals. Elena is particularly drawn to tea bowls, exploring the balance between form, touch, and quiet contemplation.
Working primarily in stoneware, her pieces are wheel-thrown or hand-carved, often subtly altered for comfort and individuality. Through natural glazes and wood or gas firing, she embraces variation and imperfection, creating work that reflects both process and the human hand.
