Levi Hawken
Levi Hawken is a contemporary artist whose practice is shaped by urban subcultures, including skateboarding and graffiti, alongside an enduring engagement with concrete and the built environment.
Beginning in Auckland’s graffiti scene in the 1990s, Hawken moved into the studio to create more enduring works, translating the textures and tensions of the street into painting, drawing, and eventually sculpture.
Influenced by the raw materiality of urban landscapes and architectural movements such as Modernism and Brutalism, his concrete sculptures explore scale, surface, and the interplay of light and shadow through layered construction.
Both robust and adaptable, his works move easily between gallery, landscape, and urban contexts, reflecting the environments that continue to inform his practice.
